The Force is no longer asleep
Today, November 28,2014, the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, has been released online and in movie theaters. Here it is:
I bet you didn’t think the force could sleep, do you? Personally, “The Force Unleashed” or “Tremors in the Force” would make a better subtitle.
But, I’m jazzed to see the film, opening December 18, 2015.
From Starwars.com:
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan & Abrams, features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. The film is being produced by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk, and John Williams returns as the composer.
Continental Congress Thanksgiving Proclamation, 1783
United States. Continental Congress. Proclamation of a day of Thanksgiving. October 18, 1783.
Whereas it hath pleased the Supreme Ruler of all human events to dispose the hearts of the late belligerent powers to put a period to the effusion of human blood, by proclaiming a cessation of all hostilities by sea and land, and these United States are not only happily rescued from the dangers and calamities to which they have been so long exposed, but their freedom, sovereignty and independence ultimately acknowledged. And whereas, in the progress of a contest on which the most essential rights of human nature depended, the interposition of Divine Providence in our favour hath been most abundantly and most graciously manifested, and the citizens of these United States have every reason for praise and gratitude to the God of their salvation. Impressed, therefore, with an exalted sense of the blessings by which we are surrounded, and of our entire dependence on that Almighty Being from whose goodness and bounty they are derived, the United States in Congress assembled, do recommend it to the several States to set apart the second Thursday in December next, as a day of Public Thanksgiving, that all the people may then assemble to celebrate with grateful hearts and united voices the praises of their Supreme and All bountiful Benefactor, for his numberless favors and mercies. That he hath been pleased to conduct us in safety through all the perils and vicissitudes of the war; that he hath given us unanimity and resolution to adhere to our just rights ; that he hath raised up a powerful ally to assist us in supporting them, and hath so far crowned our united efforts with success, that in the course of the present year hostilities have ceased, and we are left in the undisputed possession of our liberty and independence, and of the fruits of our land, and in the free participation of the treasures of the sea; that he hath prospered the labour of our husbandmen with plentiful harvests ; and above all, that he hath been pleased to continue to us the light of the blessed gospel, and secured to us in the fullest extent the rights of conscience in faith and worship.
And while our hearts overflow with gratitude, and our lips set forth the praises of our great Creator, that we also offer up fervent supplications, that it may please him to pardon all our offences, to give wisdom and unanimity to our public councils, to cement all our citizens in the bonds of affection, and to inspire them with an earnest regard for the national honor and interest, to enable them to improve the days of prosperity by every good work, and to be lovers of peace and tranquility; that he may be pleased to bless us in our husbandry, our commerce and navigation; to smile upon our seminaries and means of education, to cause pure religion and virtue to flourish, to give peace to all nations, and to fill the world with his glory.
Done by the United States in Congress assembled. Witness His Excellency, Elias Boudinot, our President, this eighteenth day of October, in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eightythree, and of the Sovereignty and Independence of the United States of America the eighth.

Battlestar Galactica Classic – The Cast in 2014
One of the appeals of 1978’s Battlestar Galactica was the special chemistry shared between the young leads, Richard Hatch, Dirk Benedict, Herb Jefferson Jr. and the lovely Anne Lockhart.
What are they doing these days? Find out in the following video uploaded by RealRadio from MegaCon 2014:

Battlestar Galactica — Remastered!
In 1978, the special visual effects of Battlestar Galactica were state-of-the-art, accomplished by John Dykstra and his fellow tech-wizards, fresh from Star Wars.
Thirty-six years later, another FX wizard, Adam “Mojo” Lebowitz, has updated the effects in a segment from the episode, “The Living Legend, Part One,” to convince Universal to update the effects for the entire series.
Merrick of Aintitcool News tells us about Lebowitz’s copious credentials:
“Mojo has been around for some time, having served in various capacities on some high-end, high-visibility Geek favorites. He was a Senior Computer Animator on BABYLON 5, a Visual Effects Supervisor on the lovely 2001 restoration of STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, a digital artist on SERENITY, a Computer Graphics Animation Supervisor on STAR TREK: VOYAGER, a previz artist on JOURNEY 2: THE MYSTERIOUS ISLAND and OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. And, most relevantly, he was a CGI artist on Ron Moore’s reinvention of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA.”
Let’s see Lebowitz’s wizardry in action.
Smaug Comes to Wellington
On the fifth day of their journey, the Hobbit Fan Fellowship arrived in Wellington, home of Weta Workshop, Weta Digital, and the other subsidiaries responsible for bringing Middle-earth to life. Peter Jackson gave them a private screening of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, but first, they encountered a certain fire-breathing visitor at Wellington Airport.

Smaug–or at least, his head–had been traveling overseas at the Weta booths in various conventions, first at Comic-Con San Diego, July 24-27, 2014, then at Salt Lake Comic Con, September 4-6, 2014, then finally at New York Comic Con, October 9-12, 2014.
But Smaug needed a final resting place, so, at least for the time being, he’s been given a home at Wellington International Airport. Here he is under (re-)construction:

“Smaug the Magnificent, considered to be the last of the great dragons in Middle Earth, has made himself comfortable in Wellington Airport’s busy terminal.
“Lying in wait amongst a rocky facade, Smaug watches over passengers checking-in with his piercing yellow eyes.
“With a total length of 4.25 metres from nose to the back of his head, the 75% to scale Smaug has been developed by Weta Workshop and Wellington Airport to accompany Gollum & the Great Eagles in welcoming visitors to the Wellington region and New Zealand.”

John Williams: Looking forward to Episode VII
Half the experience of watching a movie is hearing it. In the case of Star Wars, much of the audio portion comes from the composer, John Williams, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Thankfully, Williams will be contributing to the next chapter. Note his enthusiasm from this interview in July 2013:
